Cell phone text message saved 3 Haitians after 5 days of the Earthquake

Three people were rescued from the debris caused by the Earthquake in Haiti because of a cell phone text message. The victims were trapped in a supermarket that collapsed. One of them sent a text message to the ONU using her cell phone. According to Joseph Fernandez, a rescue member of the South Florida Urban Search and Rescue, the text message said that she was inside the Caribbean Market, near from the fruits, meats and frozen products. The rescue team went to the place and chased the sounds that three people inside were making until they found them. The three people were Ariel, 7 years, Lamy 34 years and Maria, 50 years. Since the three of them were surrounded by food they could eat and survive.

This is no surprise. Technology has increasingly become an important if not necessary part of our lives in many aspects. Perhaps with further advancement of technology, we will be able to do things like this w/out the use of a cell phone. Who knows how many lives could have been saved had there been such a technology widely available.

I can relate to this post because there were two earthquakes in my country within a month back in 2001. It was devastating, and I remember how we would hear of people getting rescued because they had sent text messages. This is really a sad story of what is going on in Haiti, and now they had a second earthquake to make matters worse. I hope they can get the help needed and continue to rescuing victims. I am glad that social networks are taking action and collaborating with fund raisers. We can tell social networking is an importan tool nowadays.

I think that this was such a good idea. For one, going through cell phone companies and having the donation added to their next bill, helps people be sure that they are not being scammed and that their efforts are making a difference in people's lives, and also, it shows corporate responsibility. I can also relate to this because y family comes from New Orleans and I had family members who's homes were damaged and needed help to get back on their feet. Natural Disasters are unfortunate and come without warning. everyone around the world that can help should in any way possible.
