Search engines perform a site review to determine the sites overall ranking. If the search engine determines your site is over optimized it can result in a lower position. Search engines look for a variety of unnatural behavior which can include pages that have identical page titles and H1 headings, too many non-contextual internal links on your site, having pages with great visual experiences above the fold, and not finding text until well below the fold.
