Facebook adding a "place" feature

Posted by Tabitha Duncanson

Facebook announced recently that they are working on a way to create a place function its website. This feature will allow people to check in at different places and come up as a status update on the page. I think this will become a great marketing tool for all the companies everywhere. This will be free advertisement for all companies and open a whole new group of possible clients just because their names will get out more. I think that the power of a community model will open up new word for consumer business. What do you think?

This new feature sounds like Foursquare (which is a separate social media site). There you check-in at mostly bars or restaurants and rack up points for going out the most and so on. But I agree that this will be a free way for places to get their name out there and hopefully some good reviews that will draw in more customers. It's amazing how much free advertising consumers do, sometimes not even realizing it.
It will also be a good way to get advertising out to people based on where they are.

I think this could lead to dangers for the persons safety. What if they begin to be stalked because people can now track them? It's an invasion of privacy at the expense consumers so companies can advertise.
