Drew Carey bids 100k for @Drew on Twitter

I just thought this was kind of amusing and thought I would share with the class... apparently Drew Carey decided that he was sick of his name on Twitter, @DrewFromTV, and put a bid of $100,000 for @Drew. The original @Drew is auctioning his name on twitter which he calls "prime real estate" for cancer research.

Well actually this seems to follow along the same lines as the old "dot com domain name" market that was hot for a little while; someone else creates as many domain names as possible that might be of interest to someone else, then sells them for seriously high prices to companies like Xerox and Kodak for a big chunk of money. Although in this case (me not being a fan of Twitter and all) I think that paying that much for anything, celebrity or not is incredible. Just think: another four years goes by and Twitter has moved away from simple "names" for "followers" and has some sort of direct-id user interface using only pictures or something. Now where's that $100,000 investment? On its way out the cyber-door.

This article makes me think about Twitter's lack of a revenue model. Offering certain @names could bring some money in for Twitter. Celebrities want to make sure that their fans know which Twitter pages are legitimate. If they can pay a certain amount of money to Twitter, there could be some kind of symbol or sign that shows that Twitter acknowledges that it is a page of a real celebrity.

On a different note, its nice to see that some celebrities are giving back to the community. Good for Drew Carey for donating a large sum of money to a great cause.
