Social Media tools to help transportation around your city

Posted by Haz-Mat Packaging

There was an interesting article posted by Mashable today about Smarter Transportation methods using social medias. The article is interesting because it offers a 'greener' way of traveling from point A to B- from car-pooling to finding a gas buddy to share driving costs. Obviously Google Maps is at the top of the list with innovative street view functions and satelite imaging.

The most interesting point of the article are new social media tools like #4 on the list Walk Score. Walk Score offers users the ability to find businesses and unique stops along your walking path. This social media can be especially beneficial for the client of group #8.
The link is posted below.

This is a pretty cool point. Now that I think about it, I work for RIT Student Government, and the director of services for SG is trying to put the Ride Board we have online and accessible from social media networks. The Ride Board, in case you don't know, is a bulletin board in the SAU where people can post their travel destinations to see if someone will carpool with them. SG hopes to expand this service by putting it online and also linking it to the SG facebook and Twitter since it is not very popular currently and can become more by utilizing social networks!

OK, this was one idea I had a few years ago. A full fledged free website that would allow various people to put their destinations and allow others to make offers for gas money etc. Soon as I started thinking about it, I realized the safety concerns that come with such a website and decided to abandon it. Combining this information with a facebook profile and a university network might just alleviate this problem. I am all for it, lets write up a business plan.
