Google Uses Adword Remarketing to Expand Audience Reach

Posted by Janice Murphy in , ,

Google is going wide with their "Remarketing" feature, which allows advertisers to reach users who visit their website after they leave. The feature uses "remarketing lists," or rather a list of website visitors that a company would like to reengage. Visitors are followed as they browse the internet via a Google cookie, and then are re-targeted on other websites with compelling messages to get them to return to the advertised site. Advertisers can run several Remarketing campaigns at once, for a variety of products or offers.

This program has been in a trial run since March of 2009, and has became popular with companies seeking to boost brand awareness, drive sales and increase their clicks. All advertisers need to do to use the Remarketing feature is to check the "Audience" tab on their Adwords account page. Concerns about user privacy emerge, because Remarketing collects a wealth of browsing information from consumers. Time will tell whether or not this feature is successful in boosting website traffic and clicks for advertisers.

Are internet users worried about advertisers having too much personal info?

Posted by Carolina Tarrazo in , ,

Many Internet users share and want to reveal their data for targeted ads they may want to see, but many others are worried about advertisers having too much personal info. A survey of the Future of Privacy Forum found that consumers are hostile to behavior targeting. To contrast this situation, a research study by the Annenberg School said that the consumers are not well-informed about privacy. There has been suggestion about changing the online audience perceptions by educating them on the value of targeting and the importance (to them) of getting to see efficient advertising campaigns. If they keep the perception of online ad targeting as a threat they won't notice the benefits it has and therefore will keep (or start) rejecting and misunderstanding its purpose. This issue should be very important to online advertisers and marketers because online advertising is expected to keep increasing in large percentages.

Google Tests Skippable Ads on YouTube

200th POST ON CLASS BLOG: Thank you very much...

After reading the post about how Online Video Ads are Booming, I came across this article about how Google will begin testing "skippable" pre-roll ads in videos on YouTube this week, and how it could lead to a new advertising model.

People who find the video they are looking for have the option to skip the ad and go directly to the content. This can open a whole new look at how people view ads online and what ads actually work. It will give Google (along with partnering companies) better insight on human behavior.

"The test that determines if and when people watch the video clips will provide Google with insight into the type of person who may skip an ad, what type of ad they might skip, and what piece of content does better than another. Google also will look at whether some ads are skipped in a specific portion of the session. Does the person skip the ad in the first video versus the third during a 30-minute time slot while on YouTube? "

Online Video Ads are Booming

Posted by Thomas Barguirdjian in , , ,

You know those short clips you're forced to watch before you can actually see the video you clicked on? Well those short little ads seem to be doing their job pretty well.

According to the New York Times, videos are now the fastest growing segment of online advertising.

"Digital video amounted to $477 million in revenue in the first half of 2009, up 38 percent from the same time period in 2008, according to the Interactive Advertising Bureau."

Do you think revenue for online video advertising is increasing because the ads are successful, or is it simply because online video content is becoming more and more popular?

Readability

Posted by Thomas Barguirdjian in , ,

Imagine your browser being able to remove all the clutter around the content you really want to read. Well imagine no more, it's called Readability.

Readability can be installed on almost every browser, including Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari. With it you can transform any website, removing all the ads that surround the content you really want to read and turning it into a format that the user chooses.

How will this affect online advertising?
