Twitter vs. LinkedIn

Posted by Kaity

Hey Class--

I was looking through the "Read Write Web" blog Professor Murthy showed us, and I really like some of the things they talk about! One article I found really interesting is at this link:

Poll: People Say Twitter is More Important than LinkedIn

Check it out and send me some feedback! I think it is really interesting because I always thought that LinkedIn would be a more important self-marketing venue as you are able to upload your resume information and past work experiences and more. But, when looking at it from a "unique visitor" perspective and realizing how many unique people actually see your Twitter information, I was pretty impressed! Toward the bottom, the article also points toward different employer markets and sizes that prefer and benefit more from viewing your Twitter and LinkedIn accounts--maybe this can help you in your job search.

Hey Kaity,

This article is a great find! It is definitely insightful and can be beneficial for all of us as we will soon be graduating and searching for jobs. Any one of us could take this information and use it as an opportunity to get ourselves out there in the social networking world, especially in areas where the job function section deems most important. I am quite surprised by these results. I would have thought that LinkedIn would be more popular because it is much more professional while Twitter is a mixture of businesses, professionals, and everyday people updating their every move.

What I'm curious to know is WHY these companies prefer Twitter so much more. Is it because more people use it? Or maybe because it is easier for them to use Twitter as a marketing and promotional tool? Or could it be an untapped resource for finding potential employees?

Excellent post Kaity, and a nice way to analyze the information as well. I am not surprised by the findings given that LinkedIn is a consultants haven whereas Twitter is much more friendly environment that lends itself for marketing. Professional presence on LinkedIn also has the benefit of being listed on Google within, we actually did not get a chance to talk about this today during class.

This is great data! Very interesting to know what companies out there want out of new employees so we can start learning more about what they want us to know about. This can be a great advantage for us and make us become well-rounded when we get a job. Keeping up to date with the newest technology of new media is important for business and the more you know the better employee and chances of getting a job there is.

Thanks Guys. Jill, I too want to know why Twitter is more preferred. I think that when a potential employee uses Twitter to post useful and intellectually stimulating information, this shows the employee they really in their every day life are more privy to this type of behavior. You know, to more credit them than just looking good on paper by resume of facebook profile activities and what not. I am not certain of the exact reasons of this however.
