How the PGA Can Us Social Media to Rebuild Its Brand

Posted by Claire Geiser in ,

Due to Tiger Woods' recent personal choices and indefinite hiatus from the sport of golf, the PGA seems to be in a tough position. Being left without their superstar (to bring attention and money to the sport), how do they stay relevant? The writer of this article mentions that the sport of golf was around before Tiger and will still be here when he has left permanently therefore they can't bank on one athlete forever. The article goes into more depth about how they can use different social medias to keep the sport relevant and keep fans interested (post-Tiger).

I think that the PGA is smart to use social media to gain back popularity. It is one of the best ways to attract attention, especially since out world runs on the internet. I think that if the PGA uses social networking sites, like Twitter, to post tweets that cause a 'buzz' more people will be talking about it and bring back attention to the positive side of the PGA.

I completely agree with you Elyse. Giving the PGA an outlet to communicate more directly with their fans and target audience will definitely help their image. I also thought it was interesting (yet less about internet marketing) how the writer talked about how the PGA shouldn't bank on just one star athlete because as Tiger goes to show, the star athlete won't always be the best representation of their image.

I agree that it is important that they don't bank on one athlete, but I think it is more than just the image of the athlete.

While focusing on social media will be important for the sport, they should not forget what Tiger Woods bought to the game. He was definitely a great player with a squeaky clean image, but he was new, young, different and most importantly, he was exciting. That's what people tuned in for. Were people watching Tiger, or were they watching the game? Where are the other excellent golfers that the "new" fans can relate to? Social media outlets will help golf change it's image and reach out to these fans, but there needs to be substance to support it.
