Posted by Dr. Raj Murthy in , ,

Starting this Thursday Twitter users can start calling (yes, voice calls) directly to one another. This service is powered by Jajah and will be available for free ( up to 2 minutes) during the beta period.

I think that adding a voice calling application to Twitter is a ridiculous idea, especially if the conversations can only be two minutes long. From my viewpoint most of the people that I know on any social network are friends, most of which I already have phone numbers for. So if I really wanted to talk to them I would simply call them, rather than going through Twitter first. Second if I really wanted to have a conversation with anyone about anything remotely important I think it is safe to assume that the conversation would last more than two minutes, therefore making the cut-off extremely annoying to me.
On the other hand if you are following someone you don't know and for some reason you must speak to them without tweeting, this would be a good alternative.
I guess all in all I think this is kind of a creepy thing to do even if you can choose to keep your number private and ignore calls.

I have to agree with Marissa that the voice calling application is unnecessary to add into Twitter. There are millions of people carrying their cell and smart phone. They could just dial the numbers to get connected and have a real conservation with their friends or family for two minutes. Twitter is a micro blogger site that designed to use the text mode, but not for voice. I don’t think this application will be successful in long term after the beta period ends.

In fact, half of the new technologies that released to the public were quite stupid and the rest of other half were good. Don’t get me wrong, I still love the new technology.

Adding voice to Twitter is going to introduce some unique marketing elements. Instead of using Twitter in place of Skype I think it will take on more of an advertising/ updating mechanism. Companies who use Twitter may decide to pre-record information, almost like a pod cast, to gain recognition for new products, developements, etc...
These pre-recordings can in turn be made available to followers.
