Avatar's Success due to Social Media

By using Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter, Avatar was about to get over $200 million dollars the first weekend, making it the 2nd highest grossing film of all time. 18,000 followers on Twitter, 700,000 on Facebook, were able to spread the word about the exciting new thriller before the movie even came out.  Facebook's updated page feature made it the place to be in order to make their brand(or in this case, movie) known to the public. Facebook even sponsored a place where stars were interviewed lived, and fans could watch and ask them questions in real-time.

This is a new advertising plan that has been used before, but this is an example of how it was used effectively, and paid off. It's ironic how the internet is allowing us to go back to the method of advertising that is the oldest: word-of-mouth.

This kind of concentrated and across the board internet marketing effort is impressive. I'm sure the planning for it was in the works for some time, particularly since these days big budget movies need to make a killing at the box office on opening weekend and sustain that as long as possible. So the timing of rolling out these efforts on Facebook, Twitter, etc. is crucial.
I can remember what a big deal was made back in 1999 when the ultra low budget film "Blair Witch Project" became a huge phenomenon. Much of the success was attributed to marketing efforts on the Web, as well as word of mouth through the Internet. At the time it was considered cutting edge marketing, but pales in comparison to what Avatar and other movies are doing.
