Kindle versus iSlate?

Posted by Maria Mercedes Rodriguez in , ,

Amazon introduced Kindle in 2007. This portable, electronic reading device that allows you to have up to 1,500 books in a slim and lightweight screen is becoming more and more popular, especially around the holiday season. In general, the new market is expected to double in 2010.

However, some argue that Kindle's poor design has lead Apple to create its own version of a portable reading device that is to be released at the beginning of 2010. Rumor has it that Apple's new iSlate will consist of a 10.1-inch touchscreen with webcam, wireless access to the internet, web browser, email software, etc. The iSlate will cost between $800 and $1000, more expensive than Amazon's Kindle.

I have heard a lot about the different digital readers that have become available and have never been interested until now. The islate sounds like it would be the best option hands down. Despite the higher price, the capabilities that it has over competitors such as the kindle would be worth it. All in one products seem to do much better than those which only serve one purpose.

My prediction for the mythical 'apple tablet' is that it will capitalize on the success of the iPhone and adopt the e-book philosophy as well.

I personally feel that single purpose ebook readers are a complete waste of money considering the average cost they go for. Apple/Jobs has the right idea with their philosophy that single, multi purpose devices are far more valuable and useful than several single purpose devices.

I wonder, though, if the majority of our population can give up the tangible qualities of a book. Turning the pages, the "new book smell", feeling the cover, instead of plastic, like every other piece of technological extremity we rely on through out the day anyway.

As for me, I'll never switch to a fake book. Nothing beats the real thing for me.
