While Google's effect on the American telecommunications industry is already large, its dealings with China and recent decision to relocate outside the Great Firewall (losing hundreds of millions of customers in the process) have had much greater ramifications. In addition to the serious respect they will earn by being one of the first giant multinationals to pull out of that market for ethical reasons, Google will find themselves a place in history as the company that brought the issue of censorship to the attention of mainstream China. There is a strategy for cold warfare which encourages civil unrest on enemy soil, by spreading censored information.
