Photoshop for Advertising

I wonder how much certain brands are depending on technology to raise popularity for their own companies? Ralph Lauren took a photo of one of their models and photoshopped it to the point that her hips were half the size of her head (picture in article). It was released, thinking that that is what our society has come from. Are people using technology trying to really look like this? Is this kind of advertising, manipulated by technology, working?
